The gateway to this adventure is M’Hamid El Ghizlane, an oasis town in southern Morocco located before the vast expanses of the Sahara. Situated at the very end of the N9 road, about 24 kilometers from the Algerian border, M’Hamid is sheltered within a magnificent palm grove stretching for 16 km along the Draa River.
Historically, this territory served as a vital cultural crossroads and a major resting stop for trans-Saharan traders. Today, M’Hamid remains a traditional nomadic area and serves as the main departure point for authentic Sahara desert excursions, particularly to the towering dunes of Erg Chigaga and the nearby Erg Lehoudi.
Located roughly 60 km southwest of M’Hamid, you will find the dramatic dunes of Erg Chigaga. This epic sandscape will truly take your breath away. Stretching 40 km in length, 15 km in width, and reaching impressive heights of up to 300 meters, it is the largest and wildest sand desert in Morocco.
Due to its relatively difficult access, Erg Chigaga remains far less touristic than its smaller cousin, Erg Chebbi. This isolation is precisely the reason it has preserved its wild, untamed, and authentic beauty.

Erg Chebbi is located near Merzouga and is easily accessible by paved roads, making it more popular for tourists. Erg Chigaga is located near M’Hamid and is much larger and wilder. It can only be reached by a 2-hour off-road 4×4 drive, offering a much more authentic and isolated desert experience.
No. The paved road ends in M’Hamid. Driving the 60 kilometers of off-road desert tracks requires a highly capable 4×4 vehicle and an experienced local driver who knows how to navigate the shifting sands without getting lost or stuck.
Due to its remote location in southern Morocco, we recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 days for a round trip starting from Marrakech. This allows you plenty of time to enjoy the scenic drive through the Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley before spending a full night in the deep Sahara.
